Sulzer Innotec has a successful history in the R&D of power and turbine equipment. We are the world leader for testing and know-how of clearance control "abradable" coatings and seals for industrial, aero and steam turbines. With our extended technical experience and our well developed supplier network, we are able to develop tailored thermal sprayed coatings for temperature or wear protection. Moreover, we also provide expert consulting regarding the multiple opportunities of integrating coatings in your equipment to improve performance and reliability.

Typical Activities

Abradable Coatings
Thermal sprayed abradable coatings are used to seal the gap between blades or labyrinth seals and housings in turbines. Following our continuous technical developments in this field, we are now able evaluate coating performance with instrumented blades or labyrinth seals in our unique test rig.
Thermal Barrier Coatings
Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are implemented when cyclic thermal loads are present. Using our expertise, we developed TBCs for internal combustion engine valves. The resulting improvement in corrosion resistance and temperature protection allowed an internal temperature increase leading to better efficiency of the motor.

Tools

In order to test the coating systems, we have at our disposal a large range of characterization methods e.g. thermo-shock, scratch or tribology testing, and our unique abradable coatings test rig.

Abradables Test Facility
We operate the world's largest test bench to examine abradable coatings in turbo machinery. This facility, built in 1988, has since become the industrial standard.
