Materials solutions and processing – keys to successful products
Thermal Spraying
Since the 1980's, Sulzer Innotec has contributed significantly to thermal spraying technologies. As a part of this activity, we develop tailored coatings for specialized applications. Moreover, as powders are often a key issue in successful coatings, we offer services for powder sourcing, fabrication and treatment. Curious about the benefits a thermally sprayed layer could bring to your product? Our professional and independent advice can bring the right solution for your surface engineering needs.

Applications

Thermally sprayed coatings are usually found in machine industry and power generation equipment. With adequate microstructure and roughness, functions such as wear resistance, self lubrication, anti-sticking, or chemical resistance can be implemented. Concrete examples of our activities are:

Thermal Barrier Coatings

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are implemented when cyclic thermal loads are present. Using our expertise, we developed TBCs for internal combustion engine valves. The resulting improvement in corrosion resistance and temperature protection allowed an internal temperature increase leading to better efficiency of the motor.

Powder Treatments

Better impregnation of hard materials can be obtained with adequate powder particle coatings, prepared from a well controlled slurry and spray drying process.

Methods

We have extended access to the numerous thermal spray equipment
at Sulzer Metco in Wohlen (CH). Moreover, if your product needs it, spray equipments from other manufacturers are also available at various partner locations.
For powder treatments, we have a whole set of lab-scale equipment to perform concept development, such as high energy mills, spray dryer, and viscosimeter. Process up-scale can then be implemented within our extended partner network.
